Lambdas host business seminar
Phi Beta Lambda's Epsilon Beta chapter ended the semester on a strong note by hosting a management and marketing seminar. The program was held on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. in the Holbart Taylor building.
The seminar began with a brief introduction by college of business professor, Dr. Daniel Keenebrew, of the first guest speaker, Stephanie Weaver, sports marketing manager of the Reliant Center in Houston Texas.
Weaver began speaking about her background and how she was exposed to sports. Due to her degree being in public relations, where she started out writing press releases, Weaver was able to pursue her current position with the Houston Texans football team. She states, "I have been in this profession for eight years," she talked more about her experience and the internships that she worked with.
The highlight of Weaver's speech was the advice that she offered students who were looking for jobs. She stated, "Do what you love, I have always loved sports, I played soccer growing up in high school, and I truly love what I do."
As the audience became more engaged, questions were posed toward the speaker for career advice. One question was, "How do students keep our brand fresh?"
She responded, "Keep your elevator pitch and know who you are, and dress how you want to be perceived and make it happen."
Another question asked was how younger students such as freshmen and sophomores can get exposure early in their collegiate career. Weaver responded, "Start applying and start early and get your foot in the door."
Weaver concluded her speech with a list of advice for the students.
"Try and get to know as many people as possible. It truly is whom you know, and get to know them in a positive way and someone who is uplifting. Work harder than the person sitting next to you, it is truly noticed and always review your work. And lastly, be humble in all you do and always be a team player," she said.
After Weaver concluded her speech, the second guest speaker was introduced, Ms. Amanda White, entrepreneur in the ACN program. White began her presentation with a brief video about the ACN program. She gave a brief overview about the benefits of the program and her method on how to make money.
The audience applauded both speakers and was served refreshments afterwards.
Programs chair Sena Gbordzoe was very proud to coordinate the management and marketing seminar.
"I think the turnout was great, I'm glad that everybody was able to take something from this," said Gbordzoe. "I feel the turnout was well expected and was executed greatly."
